Be Involved. Build Stronger Communities.

When the entire community pulls together, amazing things get accomplished.  For the 14th year, United Way of Northeastern New York’s Hands on Capitaland proved that.

Facts about Hands on Capitaland

When was Hands on Capitaland 2006?
Saturday, June 10, 2006

Why does the United Way of Northeastern New York host this project?
Hands on Capitaland emphasizes just how much can be accomplished when we pull together. It looks to foster community relationships through leveraging resources.  This partnership which combines our private, public, labor and human service sectors is community service in its finest form.

What type of projects do volunteers work on?
In 2006, 43 projects were completed by 38 companies, with just over 700 volunteers participating.  Projects included planting, raking and mulching new and existing gardens as well as building new ones, painting indoors and out, installing fencing around a children’s play area, washing airplanes, constructing storage sheds, and performing general tasks to help our local human service agencies devote more of their time and resources to the important work they do.

What organizations volunteer for Hands on Capitaland projects?
Organizations that have participated in HOC include Albany International, Bank of America, Capital District Physicians’ Health Plan (CDPHP), BBL Construction, Capital Communications Federal Credit Union, Capital District Area Labor Federation, Citizens Bank, Collins + Scoville Architects PC, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Greater Glens Falls Labor Council, IBM, KeyBank, KPMG, MVP Health Care, NYISO, the NYS Department of Taxation & Finance, NYSUT, Research Foundation of SUNY, Teamsters Local #294, and many others.

What service organizations benefit from the volunteer efforts?
The service organizations that benefit from the volunteer efforts include, Albany Citizens Council on Alcoholism, Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Rensselaer County, Catholic Charities, Center for the Disabled, Commission on Economic Opportunity for the Greater Capital Region, Inc., Clearview Center, Inc., Equinox, Historic Cherry Hill,  Joseph’s House and Shelter, NYS Coalition Against Domestic Violence, Senior Services of Albany, Trinity Institution, Unity House of Troy, local YMCAs and YWCAs, and many more.

Who are the sponsors and what do they give?
To complete the projects, United Way of Northeastern New York needs event sponsorships, as well as in-kind donations from businesses, large and small, for all the necessary supplies, including paint, brushes and hardware and garden supplies to be used by the volunteers.

In 2006, more than 30 area businesses provided cash, supplies or in-kind support valued at nearly $130,000. Each organization that helped to support this effort was essential to its success, demonstrating their commitment to long-term, sustainable improvement in the Capital Region.
